You are thinking to yourself “how long does it take to sober up from all the alcohol I drank last night?”
Well you have come to the right place and this is a easy one here ladies and gentlemen. The best way to sober up is…wait for it…is to not drink so much that you get drunk. But, if you don’t want to listen to my sage advice, then keep reading to find out how to sober up quickly…well, as quickly as possible.
If you are reading this and you are still hammering down the cold ones, then the first thing to do is to put down the drink and keep reading. Seriously…do it now!
As a quick refresher, the hangover you are experiencing or the one that you will experience in the morning are caused by dehydration and an electrolyte in-balance.
Drinking alcohol causes you to urinate more, this in turn causes you to be thirsty and causes dry mouth. And, up….you guessed it, when this happens you want to drink more, it’s a self-fulfilling prophecy…or maybe it’s not.
You probably don’t want to hear this, but the only way to sober up after drinking is just give it time. If time is something you don’t have readily available (work, interview, class, long walk on the beach), then here are some answers to the questions I hear most about how to sober up fast.
As a rough average it takes your body (really your liver) about 1 hour to process 1 unit of alcohol. So if you hammered down a 12 pack yesterday and then went to be at 2am in the morning. You will basically be drunk still until about 2pm the next day.
Water does not sober you up. It can help with re-hydration which can make you feel better. Water cannot cure a hangover or stop you from being drunk. Still, it never hurts to drink some water after a night (or day) of drinking. Some people even drink a glass of water between every alcoholic drink. It won’t sober you up, but it will prevent you from slamming drinks so quickly. That will help you avoid getting too drunk
Just like water (see above) food cannot cure your hangover. However, it does feel good to hammer down some greasy comfort food if you are feeling like shit. The problem with this is that shortly after you will want to take a nap. And then, of course, if you really overindulged, the greasy food might make you feel sick, making your hangover even worse. Consider food on a case by case basis, and make sure you have plenty of time to take a nap after eating.
The two favorite ways to replenish electrolytes are by drinking Gatorade and/or Pedialyte. Just head on up to the local 7-11 and pick up your favorite flavor and down that bad boy. Grab a couple for the road as well since one bottle won’t do it. There is also something called Lucozade if you live in Japan.
You also have some good options if you plan ahead, no matter where you live. There are various hangover remedy elixirs you can order online. These remedies are loaded with vitamins and antioxidants that replenish your body after a night of drinking. Basically, the drinks are formulated to give your body back everything it lost when you overindulged in alcohol.
When you drink one of these hangover elixirs, you’ll notice a couple of different things. First, you’ll actually get a good night’s sleep, which isn’t easy after spending the better part of the day or night downing drinks. Second, you won’t have to spend the next day in bed, nursing a hangover. While these drinks won’t sober you up, they will help you avoid a brutal hangover. That’s definitely a win.

BAC = blood alcohol content.
No, in fact it makes it worse. Caffeine can intensify your buzz or drunkenness. Also, it will make your pounding headache and hangover much worse since caffeine dehydrates you as well. There is no scientific proof that it helps, this is an old wise tale that is basically bullshit.
