Musk’s Early Life
Elon Reeve Musk was born in Pretoria, South Africa, on June 28, 1971. He showed an early aptitude for computers and entrepreneurship; at the age of 12, he created a video game called Blastar and sold it to a magazine for $500. He attended Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada, for two years before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania, where he received dual bachelor’s degrees in economics and physics.
After college, Musk headed to Silicon Valley to pursue a career in technology. He started out working as a software engineer at Webstart Central, an internet startup company. He then co-founded Zip2 Corporation, a software company that developed and provided online city guides for newspapers. In 1999, Compaq Computer Corporation acquired Zip2 for $307 million. Musk made $22 million from the sale.
Musk’s Career in Innovation
In 2002, Musk co-founded X.com, an online financial services and email payment company that later merged with Confinity to form the company we now know as PayPal. In 2002, PayPal was acquired by eBay for $1.5 billion. Musk made $165 million from the sale of PayPal to eBay.
In 2004, Musk co-founded SpaceX, an aerospace manufacturer and space transport services company. SpaceX develops technology to reduce space transportation costs and enable the colonization of Mars. To date, SpaceX has launched 42 missions to space.
In 2006, he helped create Tesla Motors, an electric vehicle manufacturer. Tesla Motors is now the world’s leading producer of electric vehicles. The company’s mission is to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy through electric vehicles. To date, Tesla has delivered over half a million electric vehicles worldwide.
Musk has also founded The Boring Company, a tunnel construction company; Neuralink, a neurotechnology company; OpenAI, a non-profit research company devoted to advancing artificial intelligence in a responsible way; and Solarcity Corporation, a solar energy services provider which was acquired by Tesla in 2016.
In 2015, Musk unveiled his vision for Hyperloop – a high-speed transportation system that could one day transport people from Los Angeles to San Francisco in just 35 minutes!
